Philippines-Ateneo Blue Eagles were able to climb back in the standings and ended their back-to-back loses as they defeated team Japan yesterday in the ongoing 40th William Jones Cup in Taiwan.
Coach Tab Baldwin turned to Thirdy Ravena in the final canto of the game where Ateneo squandered a 14-point lead. Ravena didn’t failed his team as he led his team to a victory.
The Blue Eagles were having a comfortable lead in the third period as they put the score 48-34. However, in the final period, team Japan orchestrated a comeback with their 29-14 surge and took the driver seat by grabbing the lead 63-62.
Thirdy Ravena made an and-one play in the next ball possession after he drove hard to the basket. Ravena then took care of the bonus free-throw.
That play stopped the bleeding for Ateneo as they regain the lead, 70-63.
But team Japan business was not yet over as they made another run in the final two-minutes and once again squeeze the lead to just a basket, 70-72. The Blue Eagles responded with a Gian Mamuyac mid-range jumper and then there’s Ravena “return-to-sender” block against Takuma Sato.
Ravena energized his team with 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and a block while teammate Angelo Kouame logged a double-double performance with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Team Philippines will be facing team Indonesia at 1:00 PM today when the 2018 William Jones Cup resumes.
