Barangay Ginebra proved in Game 1 that they’re the “Never-Say-Die” team in the PBA. When Rain or Shine tried to demonstrate that never-giving-up character, the Gin Kings shut them down to avoid completing a comeback.

Each team fans are expecting that the newly created rivalry will continue in the Game 2 match scheduled in the Big Dome at 7:00 PM.

Veteran head coach and won several championship matches, Tim Cone understands that it will be a game of adjustments and knows that their opponent now brewing up new counter-attacks tailored especially for them.

“That’s been our MO (modus operandi), being able to make big plays at the right time,” said Cone following his team’s 102-89 victory in the series opener.

“So far, so good,” added Cone. “I hope we’d continue to do it.”

Ginebra big-man Greg Slaughter who was busy operating inside the paint felt relieved after securing their semi-finals series opener.

“It’s relieving to get the first win, but we can’t celebrate it too much,” he said.

“We got one day and we play again and it could easily be evened up the next game if we’re not prepared. After winning like that, I expect Rain or Shine to bounce back really hard. We just got to be prepared and we can’t let our guard down from the beginning of the game.”

Rain or Shine won’t be the number one team at the end of the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup elims for nothing.

In their Game 1 duel, RoS climbed back from an 18-point difference and trimmed it down to only seven at the half. One of those big moments during the Rain or Shine rally was the four-point play of James Yap.

That Ginebra lead was even cut much more in the following quarter to just four points.

“We caught them off a little unbalanced and generally, especially good teams like Rain or Shine, will right themselves and get back to what they do well,” noted Cone.

“We got them a little bit early with some shooting, but… that second quarter they dominated us and we went into halftime quite scared, thinking: ‘Now they’ve figured us out’ because they brought down, I think, a 19- or-18-point lead down to seven.

“So they were in a good position.”

However, the suffocating defense of Ginebra was re-activated and resulted to turnovers or bad shooting for Rain or Shine. While RoS can’t buy a basket, team NSD made a 21-2 stride and coach Caloy Garcia and his troops eventually lost the game.

“Our guys… they brought it to within four and our guys were able to pull away again with some big plays.”
