Matt Nieto salvaged the game between the Philippines-Ateneo Blue Eagles versus Chinese Taipei Blue yesterday in Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taiwan, 77-76.
With just 3.10 seconds in the game, inbounder Thirdy Ravena found Matt Nieto left wide open from the three-point area. Nieto released his shot and it was all net which gave the Ateneo the lead.
With another victory the Blue Eagles had picked, their standing now improved to 5-2 and still holds the fourth spot behind Canada, Iran and South Korea.
Nieto led the balance scoring attack for the team Philippines with his 13 points while rookie William Navarro had 11 points to follow-up his stellar performance against the team Lithuania.
Thirdy Ravena was limited to score below double-digit as he only had seven points along with his five rebounds and four assists. Ivorian Angelo Kouame and Tyler Tio each had eight points.
Chinese Taipei Blue’s Ying-Chun Cheng was sent to the free-throw line after Ravena was called for a reach-in foul. Instead of splitting his charities, by some reason he decided to convert both of it.
Taiwan’s head coach was signalling to miss the second free-throw but it didn’t happen.
That gave coach Tab Baldwin a chance to design a play in the next ball possession which ended up to a Nieto’s dramatic three-pointer.
Next game for Pilipinas-Ateneo will be at 3:00 PM on Sunday. Winner of the game will be awarded with a bronze finish.
