The young Australian Boomers have defeated the Gilas Pilipinas boys yesterday in their semi-finals match at Stadium 29 in Thailand, 77-43.
Because of that Friday’s game results, our young Gilas will be heading to a bronze medal game against team China while Australia will be meeting the Tall Blacks of New Zealand in a gold medal showdown.
After its four-game winning streak in the FIBA 2018 Under-18 Asian Championship team Philippines logged its first defeat.
The twin towers of Gilas got shutdown in that game. Kai Sotto was limited to only a basket along with his eight boards while his partner in the paint AJ Edu got nine points and ten rebounds.
None from team Philippines side scored in double-digit, the most in Edu’s nine markers.
In the opening quarter, Gilas was up to the challenge as they keep the score close and ended the first period down with only two points, 12-14. However, in the next three quarters it was all dominated by team Australia.
Most probably the secret sauce of the Boomers is their back-court press and matching up Kai Sotto and AJ Edu inside the post. That display of defense were evident especially in the second quarter where they lambasted their opponent with 30-8 score.
During the third quarter, the Boomers had a huge pile of lead, 44-20 and eventually logged their fifth consecutive victories.
This afternoon, game time for the team Philippines and team China is set to 2:30 PM (Philippine time) live from Thailand.
