The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters easily dispatched the Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel in its second conference debut. Final score was 108-89.
It was a 2017-18 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals round rematch for Ginebra and Rain or Shine. Both teams had a three straight matchup during the All-Filipino conference. One at the tail end of the elimination round then remaining two were in the playoffs.
The Gin Kings swept all of those games which ended the first conference campaign of the Elasto Painters.
Now in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, ROS immediately made its statement and were successful to avenge their earlier loses.
“Finally, tinalo na rin namin ang Ginebra,” head coach Caloy Garcia said. “As long as we move the ball and get those open shots, I think we’ll have a good conference. Pero yun nga, we still have to work on more things, especially on the defensive side. Siyempre, today is just the first game of Ginebra, so you never know,” Garcia added.
Six players from the Elasto Painters scored in double figures led by Raymond Almazan who logged 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. James Yap added 13 markers off the bench where most of his points came from long distance. Yap was three-of-five from beyond the three-point arc.
At the start of the game, Rain or Shine ignited a 13-0 surge and leads to a 24-12 first quarter lead. Then on the second half ROS offensive flow still effective and even increased their lead as much as 21 points.
The Gin Kings tried to trim down the deficit but each time they orchestrate a comeback, the Elasto Painters always have an answer in order to disrupt them.
Team NSD import Charles Garcia had a decent PBA debut by contributing 19 points, six rebounds, and eight assists but not enough to deliver a win.
Japeth Aguilar led the Gin Kings with 28 points and 12 rebounds while LA Tenorio chipped in with his 13 points in a losing effort.
